— Retirement planning in North Sydney
The retirement decisions that matter most.
Retirement planning is more than an investment strategy. It's a set of decisions about when to stop work, how much income you'll need, how to structure your super and non-super assets, when to draw the age pension, and how to keep the plan resilient across three decades of market and life change.
For North Shore clients, the complexity is usually real: multiple super accounts, an SMSF or the option of one, an investment portfolio, an owner-occupied home, sometimes an inheritance in play, and a marginal tax rate that makes structure matter. Our North Sydney planners have been building strategies around exactly this profile from West Street since 1997.
Because AGS brings financial planning, SMSF, accounting and mortgage broking together in one firm, your retirement plan doesn't stop at investment allocation. Tax positioning, contribution timing, estate structure and any lingering debt are all coordinated by the same team.

Retirement advice grounded in the North Shore.
The lower North Shore has one of the country's highest concentrations of self-funded retirees and pre-retirees with real complexity. Multiple super funds, an investment portfolio, an owner-occupied home in a strong market, sometimes an inheritance or the option of an SMSF. Our planners build strategy around that reality, from Mosman, Cremorne and Neutral Bay to Chatswood, Crows Nest, St Leonards and Lane Cove.
Retirement plans rarely stay static. Rules change, markets move, life happens. We meet clients yearly (more often when circumstances warrant) to keep the plan aligned to what's actually going on.

How much super do I need to retire on the North Shore?
There's no single number. It depends on your lifestyle, whether you own your home outright, your partner's position, whether you'll receive any age pension, and how long you and your partner live. ASFA's benchmark for a comfortable retirement is roughly $73k a year for a couple, but for many North Shore clients the target sits materially higher. The retirement projection is where we answer this specifically, based on your goals rather than a national average.
When should I start retirement planning?
The last decade before retirement is where the highest-value decisions are made: contribution strategies, super consolidation, transition-to-retirement pension timing, debt reduction, and how the portfolio should shift as you approach drawdown. Earlier is fine. Later is workable but the options narrow. We work with clients from their late 40s onwards, with intensity picking up in the final five to seven years.
Do I need an SMSF to retire well?
No. Many clients retire comfortably in a well-chosen public fund. An SMSF adds control and investment flexibility, plus the ability to hold direct property or unlisted assets, but it also adds administration and responsibility. Our advice is honest either way. AGS runs an SMSF division managing 500+ funds, so if an SMSF is the right structure for you, we can handle it. If it isn't, we'll tell you.
Can you handle my tax, super and investments together?
Yes. AGS's North Sydney office houses the planners, the accountants and the SMSF specialists who need to work together for a retirement plan to run smoothly. Investment allocation, tax positioning, contribution strategy and estate structure are handled as one plan rather than negotiated across three separate firms.
