— Retirement planning in Melbourne

The retirement questions worth answering early.

Retirement planning is a set of joined-up decisions: when to stop work, how much annual income you'll need, how to structure your super and non-super assets, whether an SMSF fits, when to draw the age pension, and how to make the plan resilient across the two or three decades ahead of you.

For most Melbourne clients the complexity is real. Multiple super accounts, an inheritance in play, a home in an established suburb, sometimes an investment property, and a marginal tax rate that makes structure worth thinking about. Our Melbourne planners have been building strategies around this profile from South Melbourne, backed by AGS's national specialist depth.

Because financial planning, SMSF and accounting sit inside one firm at AGS, your retirement plan doesn't stop at investment allocation. Tax positioning, contribution timing, estate structure and any lingering debt are coordinated by the same team.

— Local knowledge

Retirement planning grounded in Melbourne.

We advise clients across inner-southern and bayside Melbourne (South Melbourne, Port Melbourne, Albert Park, St Kilda, Prahran, South Yarra, Toorak) and pre-retirees moving in from regional Victoria who want a local point of contact. Face-to-face at York Street, or by phone and video, whichever suits your week.

Retirement planning is one of the areas where the plan getting reviewed matters as much as the plan being built. Rules change, markets move, life happens. We meet clients yearly to keep the plan aligned to what's actually going on.

How much super do I need to retire comfortably in Melbourne?

There's no single number. It depends on your lifestyle, whether you own your home outright, your partner's position, whether you'll receive any age pension, and how long you and your partner live. ASFA's national benchmark for a comfortable retirement is roughly $73k a year for a couple, but the number that matters is your own. The retirement projection is where we work it out specifically.

When should I start retirement planning?

The last decade before retirement is where the highest-value decisions get made: contribution strategies, super consolidation, transition-to-retirement pension timing, debt reduction, and how the portfolio should shift as you approach drawdown. Earlier is fine. Later is workable but the options narrow. Most Melbourne clients come to us in their 50s and early 60s.

Do I need an SMSF to retire well?

No. Many clients retire well in a well-chosen public fund. An SMSF adds control and investment flexibility, plus the ability to hold direct property or unlisted assets, but it also adds administration and responsibility. Our advice is honest either way. AGS runs an SMSF division managing 500+ funds, so if an SMSF is the right structure for you, we can handle it. If it isn't, we'll tell you.

Are the advisers actually based in Melbourne?

Yes. Our Melbourne planners are based at the South Melbourne office at York Street, near Clarendon Street. You can meet in person or, if it suits you better, by phone and video with the same adviser.
