The 4 Phases of Retirement

Dr Riley Moynes' TEDx research identifies four distinct psychological phases most people experience in retirement — well worth understanding before you reach that milestone.

In a recent article Retirement Planning: Life Beyond the Financials, we discussed a variety of non-financial aspects to retirement planning, and ways to prepare emotionally, socially and mentally.

Following on from this, we want to share an insightful TEDx presentation from Dr Riley Moynes, titled The 4 Phases of Retirement. After successful careers in education and then wealth management, Dr Moynes encountered these four distinct phases himself, which led him to the research on which he wrote and presents.

When interviewed on his research, Dr Moynes commented, “I wish I knew then what I know now about the psychological challenges that accompany retirement. It would have made things much clearer and easier.”

While his experience and research is based on Canada and North America, it rings true for Australians approaching or already in retirement — particularly those thinking through retirement planning holistically, beyond just the financial numbers. Understanding your superannuation position is one part of the picture; knowing how you’ll structure your time and identity is another.

We hope you find the presentation informative. For any assistance in planning for your retirement — financially and personally — contact us here at AGS. Our financial planning team takes a whole-of-life approach to help you retire with confidence.
